Grass Valley, California

Grass Valley CA Real Estate, Grass Valley area and Community Information

Grass Valley, California, is a community with about 13,000 residents that is nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada at an elevation of 2,500 feet. It is the largest community in the western portion of Nevada County.

History

It is not clear why the post office was named Grass Valley when it opened in 1851 at the height of the Califonia Gold Rush. Prior to that moment in time, the community had been known informally as Boston Ravine.

Two mines, the North Star and the Empire, turned out to be two of the most productive gold mines in the history of the state. Many early settlers were Cornish tin miners from England. They had the requisite skills to succeed in the deep hard rock mines being dug here, and they were driven from their English homes by a collapse in tin prices.

Parks and Recreation

Empire Mine State Historic Park includes the remnants of the famous Empire Mine that produced over 5.6 million ounces of gold during its century-long existence. During that time, 367 miles of tunnels were routed through the gold-bearing rock. The park preserves the mine owner's original estate home and gardens. It also offers over eight miles of trails for hikers, bikers and horseback riders.

Attractions and Activities

The Art Deco facade of the Del Oro Theater has been a part of Grass Valley since 1940. The brightly lit, 70-foot tower evokes thoughts of a bygone era of film. Today, the Del Oro Theater has new seats, state-of-the-art sound and digital 3-D projectors. The Kids Summer Movies Series is quite popular.

Events

Since 1967, the Grass Valley Cornish Christmas Celebration has paid homage to the Cornish miners that came here long ago. In addition to specialty foods, arts and crafts, the big event features the Grass Valley Cornish Carol Choir, Tommyknocker Cloggers, jugglers, carolers and Santa Claus. Both West Main and Mill Streets are closed for the holiday festivities. Some choir members are descendants of the Cornish miners that came to the valley in the mid-19th century.
