Nevada County CA Real Estate, Nevada County area and Community Information
Nevada County, California, is located in the Sierra Nevada about one hour north of Sacramento. It was created in 1851 from portions of Yuba County. The county was named after the mining outpost of Nevada City. In Spanish, Nevada means "snow-covered" or "snowy." Today, about 100,000 citizens live in the county. The population has doubled since 1980, thanks in large part to the growth of high-tech companies here. The county has sometimes been called the "Silicon Valley of the Sierras."
It was gold that first attracted prospectors and miners here by the thousands beginning in 1849. Even English miners left the tin mines across the Atlantic to seek their fortunes here. The county became home to the most prolific mines in the state. For example, the Empire Mine produced 5.6 million ounces of gold during a period that spanned many decades. The commercial production of the precious metal continued in Nevada County until after World War II.
Parks and Recreation
Fishermen will find many opportunities in the county's reservoirs and streams. For example, at Scott's Flat Lake
, one can pursue rainbow trout that are regularly stocked every summer. Largemouth bass, bluegills and brown trout are also caught at Scott's Flats Lake. Hiking, swimming and camping opportunities are also available.
